The CIRCOLIVE Kick-Off Meeting was held on 11 and 12, March 2024, in Barcelona, Spain. This event marked the beginning of an three-year initiative aimed at transforming the olive oil sector by promoting circular business models and integrating advanced digital technologies. Funded by the European Education and Culture Executive Agency, the project brings together a consortium of leading organizations from Greece, Portugal, Italy, Spain and Croatia.
The meeting gathered representatives from all partner organizations to discuss and align on the project’s objectives, detailed work plan, and the key activities scheduled for the coming months. The discussions provided a comprehensive overview of CIRCOLIVE, emphasizing its critical role in enhancing sustainability and fostering innovation within the olive oil industry.
During the meeting, participants reviewed the current state of the olive oil sector, noting its significant environmental impact due to high energy consumption and extensive land use, which contribute notably to greenhouse gas emissions. The project aims to address these challenges by promoting sustainable practices and supporting the EU’s transition to a circular economy.
A major focus of CIRCOLIVE is the comprehensive research phase, which will identify existing practices, technological gaps, and the skills required for the sector’s shift towards circular economy principles. This research will inform the development of transnational vocational education and training (VET) curricula and continuous education programs tailored specifically for small operators in the olive oil sector.
The consortium also discussed strategies for fostering collaboration between higher education institutions, vocational training providers, research organizations, and industry stakeholders. This collaboration is vital for developing and validating holistic circular business models that can be effectively implemented across the sector.
Dissemination and awareness-raising activities were another key topic, with plans to create a project website, produce both printed and digital informational materials, and organize various events such as infodays and thematic workshops. These efforts aim to ensure broad dissemination of project findings and promote best practices across the industry.
The successful launch of CIRCOLIVE in Barcelona set a solid foundation for the project’s future activities. Over the next three years, the consortium will focus on conducting detailed research, developing educational programs, and fostering innovation and sustainability within the olive oil sector. The collaborative effort and commitment of all partners highlight the potential of CIRCOLIVE to significantly contribute to the EU’s circular economy objectives, ensuring the long-term viability and competitiveness of the olive oil industry.
